About the Program
Making a Difference (MAD); South West is a youth-led advisory group supported by Beyond the Bell Great South Coast, empowering young people aged 12–19 across six local government areas in South West Victoria.
Launched in 2021 following the Youth Conversations research, MAD South West amplifies youth voices in local decision-making by connecting young people with community organisations, local councils, and youth services. The MAD Youth Crew plays a vital role in shaping local policy, leading youth advocacy, and designing community-based initiatives that foster confidence, leadership, and intergenerational respect across the region.
What We Do
Youth Voice and Advocacy
MAD South West empowers young people in South West Victoria to actively shape local decisions. Members regularly consult with local councils, schools, and youth services, ensuring youth voice influences community programs, policy, and strategic priorities.
Co-Design and Research
MAD plays a lead role in youth-led research through the Youth Conversations Initiative. Members help co-design surveys, analyse data, and ensure that lived experience is central to local and national policy. Their insights support frameworks such as the Youth Engagement Toolkit.
Leadership Development
Through public speaking, co-facilitation, training, and regional forums, MAD members grow as youth leaders, building confidence, collaboration skills, and advocacy capabilities.
Creative Projects
MAD collaborates with community partners to co-design and deliver projects that reflect youth priorities including: creative branding, media, and local engagement activities.
Regional Collaboration
MAD serves as a vital link between young people, local government youth officers, and community organisations, strengthening shared leadership and regional coordination across the Great South Coast.
